5. HAZRAT HABIB AJMI

Once a guest was partaking of the meager meal that poor Hazrat Ajmi had supplied to him, when a beggar knocked at the door, Hazrat Ajmi took that food and handed it over to the beggar. Surprised at this ugly behavior of Hazrat Ajmi, the guest (who was no other that Hazrat Hasan Basri) said, “You must know a little of manners too.” Hazrat Ajmi was silent for a moment, when to the surprise of Hazrat Hasan there appeared a woman with a delicious dish. Both sat and partook of it. Then Hazrat Ajmi said, “Hasan, you are a good man. You should develop a little more faith in God (i.e., know that a thing giver in God’s name returns severalfold.)”

Once Hazrat Hasan Basri went to Hazrat Habib at the time of evening prayers. Hazrat Hasan heard, Hazrat Habib pronouncing a word during the prayer. He considered it improper to say his prayers with him, and therefore said his prayers separately. During the night he dreamt the Lord saying to Hazrat Hasan: “Hasan, if you had stood behind Habib Ajmi and said your prayers, you would have earned Our pleasure, and that single Namaaz of yours would have borne thee greater benefit than all the Namaaz (prayers) taken together which you have offered in your life-time. You tried not into the purity and excellence of his heart. Know it that We cherish a contrite heart much more than merely correct pronunciation of words.”

Hazrat Hasan Basri: Ajmi (who was a disciple of Hazrat Hasan), who did you attain to such spiritual height?
Hazrat Habib Ajmi: By whitening (purifying) the heart (by prayers), and not by darkening papers (by writing).
Thereupon Hazrat Hasan Basri said, “Alas! My learning profited others but not me!”

Hearing the Holy Qur’an being recited Hazrat Habib Ajmi used to weep bitterly. People asked him: “When you do not understand the meaning of the Holy Book, why do you weep?” In reply, he said that though he was an Iranian but his heart was Arabian.

Sayings of Hazrat Habib Ajmi:

i. God protects them Himself who cast their burden on the Lord.
ii. Envy and love of the world must depart from the heart of the true seeder.
